Quran for Anxiety

“Truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” - 13:28

Anxiety is not a sign of weak faith - even prophets felt it. What Islam offers is not a denial of the feeling but a direction: turn the worried heart toward the One who created it. These are the verses Muslims have returned to for centuries when fear gripped their chest and sleep would not come.

These verses are for spiritual comfort and do not replace professional mental health care. If you are in crisis, please reach out to a licensed therapist or your local crisis helpline. The Quran is part of healing - not a substitute for medicine.

Surah Ad-Duha

“Your Lord has not forsaken you”

QuranSurah Ad-Duha 93:3-5

Ma wadda’aka rabbuka wa ma qala. Wa lal-akhiratu khayrul-laka minal-oola. Wa lasawfa yu’teeka rabbuka fatarda.

Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor is He displeased. And the Hereafter is better for you than the first life. And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.

When to recite: This surah was revealed when the Prophet ﷺ felt abandoned during a pause in revelation. Recite when you feel God has gone silent, when prayers feel unheard, or when you are convinced things will never get better.

Surah Ash-Sharh

“With hardship comes ease”

QuranSurah Ash-Sharh 94:5-6

Fa-inna ma’al-‘usri yusra. Inna ma’al-‘usri yusra.

For indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.

When to recite: Allah repeats this twice for emphasis. Scholars note: with the one hardship come two eases. Recite when overwhelmed by a single problem that feels permanent - this verse reminds you ease is already on its way, and Allah has promised it twice.

Ar-Ra’d 13:28

“In the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest”

QuranSurah Ar-Ra’d 13:28

Alladheena amanoo wa tatma’innu quloobuhum bi-dhikrillah. Ala bi-dhikrillahi tatma’innul-quloob.

Those who have believed, and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

When to recite: When anxiety races through your mind, the antidote Allah prescribes is dhikr - remembrance. SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Astaghfirullah. Repeat one of these slowly when your chest feels tight. It works because Allah promised it would.

Al-Baqarah 2:286

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity”

QuranSurah Al-Baqarah 2:286

La yukallifullahu nafsan illa wus’aha.

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

When to recite: When you feel you cannot handle one more thing, this verse is Allah’s direct testimony that you can. He decreed your test knowing your exact capacity. Recite when convinced you have hit your limit - the One who placed the test knows you better than you know yourself.

Yunus 10:62

“No fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve”

QuranSurah Yunus 10:62

Unquestionably, the allies of Allah - no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve.

When to recite: A direct promise to those close to Allah: no fear, no sadness. Allies of Allah here means those who believe and are conscious of Him (10:63). Recite when fear of the future grips you - closeness to Allah is the protection against both fear and grief.

The Prophet’s Dua for Anxiety & Grief

When the Prophet ﻽ encountered distress, this is what he recited. It addresses not only anxiety and grief but the underlying causes - weakness, laziness, debt, social pressure.

Allahumma inni a’oodhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-‘ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala’id-dayn wa ghalabatir-rijal.

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6369
