Quran Verses About Patience (الصبر)
The Quran mentions patience (sabr) over 90 times. These 12 verses reveal that patience is not passive waiting - it is active endurance with trust in Allah, the path to His reward without limit.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ
Yaaa ayyuhal laazeena aamanus ta'eenoo bissabri was Salaah; innal laaha ma'as-saabireen
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
Allah is WITH the patient - His companionship and support are promised to those who endure.
قُلْ يَٰعِبَادِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ فِى هَٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌۭ ۗ وَأَرْضُ ٱللَّهِ وَٰسِعَةٌ ۗ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى ٱلصَّٰبِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍۢ
Qul yaa 'ibaadil lazeena aamanut taqoo Rabbakum; lillazeena ahsanoo fee haazihid dunyaa hasanah; innamaa yuwaffas saabiroona ajrahum bighayri hisab
Say, "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account."
The reward for patience is unlimited - "without account" means beyond calculation.
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْخَوْفِ وَٱلْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَنفُسِ وَٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ
Wa lanablu wannakum bishai'im minal khawfi waljoo'i wa naqsim minal amwaali wal anfusi was samaraat; wa bashshiris saabireen
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
Tests are guaranteed - but so is the good news for those who remain patient through them.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱصْبِرُوا۟ وَصَابِرُوا۟ وَرَابِطُوا۟ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanus biroo wa saabiroo wa raabitoo wattaqul laaha la'allakum tuflihoon
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
Three commands: be patient, out-patient others, and stay firm - success follows.
وَٱصْبِرْ وَمَا صَبْرُكَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ
Wasbir wa maa sabruka illaa billaah
And be patient, and your patience is not but through Allah.
True patience comes from Allah - you cannot be patient on your own strength alone.
وَٱصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Wasbir fa innal laaha laa yudee'u ajral muhsineen
And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.
No patience is wasted - Allah preserves every moment of your endurance.
يَٰبُنَىَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱنْهَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَ ۖ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ ٱلْأُمُورِ
Yaa bunaiya aqimis-Salaata waamur bilma'roofi wanha 'anil munkari wasbir 'alaa maaa asaabaka inna zaalika min 'azmil umoor
O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is of the matters requiring determination.
Luqman's advice to his son - patience is a sign of strong character and resolve.
وَلَمَن صَبَرَ وَغَفَرَ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمِنْ عَزْمِ ٱلْأُمُورِ
Wa laman sabara wa ghafara inna zaalika lamin 'azmil umoor
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters requiring determination.
Patience combined with forgiveness - the highest level of character.
وَٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلْخَٰشِعِينَ
Wasta'eenoo bissabri was Salaah; wa innahaa lakabee ratun illaa alal khaashi'een
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]
Patience is hard - Allah acknowledges this. But it becomes easier with humility and prayer.
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ
Il lal lazeena aamanu wa 'amilus saali haati wa tawa saw bil haqqi wa tawa saw bis sabr
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
The recipe for salvation: faith + good deeds + truth + patience. Patience is essential.
