Quran Verses About Gratitude (الشكر)
Gratitude (shukr) in the Quran is directly linked to increase. "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you" (14:7). These verses teach the power of thankfulness.
وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ
Wa iz ta azzana Rabbukum la'in shakartum la azeedannakum
And remember when your Lord proclaimed, "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you."
The divine promise: gratitude = increase. The most powerful motivation to be thankful.
فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِى وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ
Fazkurooneee azkurkum washkuroo lee wa laa takfuroon
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
Remember Allah and He remembers you. Gratitude and remembrance go hand in hand.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Fabi ayyi aalaaa'i Rabbikumaa tukazzibaan
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Repeated 31 times in Surah Ar-Rahman - a powerful reminder of countless blessings.
وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَآ
Wa in ta'uddoo ni'matal laahi laa tuhsoohaa
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them.
Allah's blessings are literally uncountable - gratitude is always appropriate.
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا لُقْمَٰنَ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ أَنِ ٱشْكُرْ لِلَّهِ
Wa laqad aatainaa Luqmaanal hikmata anishkur lillaah
And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom: "Be grateful to Allah."
Gratitude IS wisdom - the first thing Allah gave Luqman was the command to be thankful.
رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِىٓ أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ
Rabbi aqzi'neee an ashkura ni'matakal lateee an'amta 'alaiya wa 'alaa waalidaiya
My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents.
A dua asking Allah for the ability to be grateful - even gratitude requires His help.
هَٰذَا مِن فَضْلِ رَبِّى لِيَبْلُوَنِىٓ ءَأَشْكُرُ أَمْ أَكْفُرُ
haazaa min fadli Rabbee li yabluwaneee 'a-ashkuru am akfuru
This is from the favor of my Lord - to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful.
Every blessing is a test: will you be grateful or take it for granted?
وَإِن تَشْكُرُوا۟ يَرْضَهُ لَكُمْ
wa in tashkuroo yardahu lakum
And if you are grateful, He approves it for you.
Allah is PLEASED when you are grateful - it brings His approval and satisfaction.
فَكُلُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ حَلَٰلًۭا طَيِّبًۭا وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ
Fakuloo mimmaa razaqa kumul laahu halaalan taiyibanw washkuroo ni'matal laahi
Then eat of what Allah has provided for you which is lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah.
Even eating is an act of gratitude - every meal is a blessing to acknowledge.
