Quran Verses About Death (الموت)
The Quran addresses death directly and honestly. These verses remind us that death is certain, life is temporary, and the real journey begins after we leave this world.
Kulu nafsin zaaa'iqatul mawt
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection.
The most quoted verse about death - no soul is exempt.
Kullu nafsin zaaa'iqatul mawti summa ilainaa turja'oon
Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.
Death is not the end - it is a return to Allah.
Kullu nafsin zaaa'iqatul mawt; wa nablookum bishsharri walkhairi fitnatanw wa ilainaa turja'oon
Every soul will taste death. And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.
Both hardship and blessing are tests - this life is a temporary examination.
Ainamaa takoonoo yudrikkumul mawtu wa law kuntum fee buroojim mushai yadah
Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you should be within towers of lofty construction.
No fortress, no wealth, no power can prevent death.
Qul innal mawtal lazee tafirroona minhu fa innahoo mulaaqeekum
Say, "Indeed, the death from which you flee - indeed, it will meet you."
Running from death is futile - it will find everyone.
Allaahu yatawaffal anfusa heena mawtihaa wallatee lam tamut fee manaamihaa
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die He takes during their sleep.
Sleep is the "lesser death" - every night Allah takes our souls and returns them as a mercy.
Allazeena izaaa asaabathum museebatun qaalooo innaa lillaahi wa innaaa ilaihi raaji'oon
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon - the words every Muslim says upon hearing of death.
Qul inna Salaatee wa nusukee wa mahyaaya wa mamaatee lillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds."
Life AND death belong to Allah - both should be dedicated to Him.
Wa jaaa'at sakratul mawti bilhaqq; zaalika maa kunta minhu taheed
And the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid.
At the moment of death, all truth becomes clear - there is no more denial.
