Quran Verses About Parents (الوالدين)

وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَٰنًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ ٱلْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَآ أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَآ أُفٍّۢ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا

Wa qadaa Rabbuka allaa ta'budooo illaaa iyyaahu wa bilwaalidaini ihsaanaa; immaa yablughanna 'indakal kibara ahaduhumaaa aw kilaahumaa falaa taqul lahumaaa uffinw wa laa tanharhumaa

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them so much as "uff," and do not repel them.

Not even "uff" - the smallest expression of annoyance is forbidden toward parents.

وَٱخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ ٱلذُّلِّ مِنَ ٱلرَّحْمَةِ وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًۭا

Wakhfid lahumaa janaahaz zulli minar rahmati wa qur Rabbir hamhumaa kamaa rabbayaanee sagheera

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small."

The most beautiful dua for parents - remember how they raised you, then pray for them.

وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍۢ

Wa wassainal bi waalidaihi hamalat hu ummuhoo wahnan 'alaa wahninw wa fisaaluhoo fee 'aamaini anishkur lee wa liwaalidaika

And We have enjoined upon man care for his parents. His mother carried him, increasing her in weakness upon weakness. Be grateful to Me and to your parents.

The mother's sacrifice highlighted - weakness upon weakness during pregnancy and nursing.

وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ إِحْسَٰنًا ۖ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرْهًۭا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًۭا

Wa wassainal insaana biwaalidaihi ihsaanan hamalathu ummuhoo kurhanw-wa wada'athu kurhan

And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship.

30 months of carrying and weaning - Allah reminds us of the physical toll on mothers.

وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَٰنًۭا

Wa'budul laaha wa laa tushrikoo bihee shai'anw wa bilwaalidaini ihsaanaa

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good.

Parents come immediately after Tawhid - second only to worshipping Allah alone.

وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ حُسْنًۭا

Wa wassainal insaana biwaalidaihi husnan

And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents.

Ihsan (excellence) toward parents - not just good treatment, but the BEST treatment.

وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَٰنًۭا

wa bilwaalidaini ihsaanaa

And to parents, good treatment.

Part of Allah's ten commandments in this verse - parents are among the top priorities.

وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ وَلَمْ يَكُن جَبَّارًا عَصِيًّۭا

Wa barram biwaalidayhi wa lam yakum jabbaaran 'asiyyaa

And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.

Describing Prophet Yahya (John) - being good to parents is a quality of prophets.

رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِنًۭا

Rabbigh fir lee wa liwaa lidaiya wa liman dakhala baitiya mu'minan

My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer.

Prophet Nuh's dua - including parents in your prayers is a Prophetic tradition.
